MILILANI WAITS FOR SHUTTLE BUS PROPOSALS

MILILANI - The schedule and fares for the new circulator bus shuttle service for Mililani will be determined from proposals due from 4 bus companies on Aug 3. While some funding is being provided by Mililani developer Castle & Cooke, the cost of continuing the service will depend on ridership & fares collected.
Competing bus companies will be submitting proposals based on a single bus providing hourly service. The tentative route includes service to most of the public schools, community recreation centers, shopping centers, the Olaloa retirement complex, Mililani District Park, & a portion of Mililani Mauka. Riders will also be able to transfer to city bus routes on Kamehameha Highway at Lanikuhana Ave, Kuahelani Ave, & Mehula Pkwy.
In the early 1990s, a similar city-sponsored shuttle bus service was discontinued because of poor ridership.

FAQ - ZIPPER LANE

What is the zipper lane? It’s an additional traffic lane on the westbound side of the H-1 for Honolulu bound commuters from West & Central Oahu.
Why is it called zipper? The lane is created by a portable string of concrete barriers that look like zippers. The barriers are permanently stored next to the median barrier on the westbound side of the H-1.
How will it work? A machine will move the zipper barriers each morning to open the additional lane at 5:30 am. At 9 am, the machine will move the barriers to their permanent storage location next to the median barrier
Who can use the zipper lane? Buses, vanpools, & carpools with 3 or more persons.
Where would Mililani commuters enter the zipper lane? The entrance will be at the junction of H-1 & H-2.
Where would they exit the lane? The only exit is at the Pearl Harbor Interchange just before the Airport Viaduct. But commuters can continue on the existing HOV lane to the Keehi Interchange - this HOV lane will be reserved for vehicles with 3 or more persons.
What is the most convenient way to enter the zipper lane? Stay in the HOV lane on the H-2, & it will take you directly into the zipper lane.
When will the zipper lane open? The target date is August, in time for the start of the back-to-school crunch.
Besides shortening the commute time to Honolulu, why was the zipper lane built? It’s cheaper than adding a permanent lane - $16 million vs. tens of millions of dollars. Plus it provides flexibility - the portable barriers can be moved to another location if the H-1 traffic becomes more balanced as Kopolei is developed & more jobs are created in the Leeward area.
People now cheat in the HOV lane - won’t they also cheat in the zipper lane? Some might, but they’ll be caught because there’s only a single exit. Police will monitor the lane & violators will be stopped & issued citations. In addition to being fined, violators may end up paying more for auto insurance.
I’m a 1-person commuter - how can I take advantage of the zipper lane? The only way is to ride a bus or join a carpool. For detail information on these options, call LOTMA at 677-RIDE.
