Abercrombie Surges Ahead!
ONLINE POLLS ATTRACT OVER 1,000 PARTICIPANTS

AUGUST 23, 1998 - From a few hundred a few weeks ago, Mililani Interactive’s online polls have attracted over 1,000 visitors. The polls are unscientific, but are getting a lot of attention.
The most dramatic result thus far is Neil Abercrombie’s come-from behind surge. Prior to the Iolani Palace throne incident, Abercrombie was behind by as much 40-percentage points. The latest tally shows him leading, 46% to Quientin Kawananakoa’s 44%, with Gene Ward trailing with 19%.
While Linda Lingle continues to lead Ben Cayetano 49% to 38%, Mazie Hirono has a big lead over her republican challengers for lieutenant governor. Hirono is leading Michael Liu & Stan Koki 65% to 27%.
In the 1st district council race, new-comer Cliff LaBoy has a surprising lead over incumbent Rene Mansho - 65% to 31%.
The polls are at http:www.hawaii.rr.com/mililani, & are offered as a community service & to generate interest in the elections process.

Letter to Editor
A MESSAGE TO CANDIDATES FOR GOVERNOR

Here's   what your political ads have told me thus far. One of you did a lot...many many years ago. Another has done a lot over the past 4 years...but doesn’t want to be blamed for Hawaii’s economic plight. And another says she’s going to do for the state...what she’s done for a small county. Fine and good. Your ads have been interesting. But I still don’t know which of you should get my vote. In the days ahead, please tell me what I need to know so that I can decide who to vote for. Just simply tell me where we’re going, what route we’re taking, & what price we have to pay to get there. And just give me your solemn word that no matter what obstacles we face along the way, you’ll be prepared for them...you’ll be proactive & take full responsibility throughout our journey...you’ll inspire honest & competent people to help us...you’ll mange our money wisely as if it were your very own...& you’ll keep us on-course & never allow us to float aimlessly.

DO YOU LIKE TO PLAY CHESS?
by Jon Young

If you enjoy chess, or want to learn how to play, now you can, right here in Mililani. The Mililani Chess Club was formed in 1995 to promote chess for fun & education with emphasis on teaching young people. Club members vary in ability from novice to master. The club meets weekly in an adult-supervised environment.
In open play, members challenge one another. Often, children will play more experienced players to improve their game.
Resident national masters teach principles of chess, & impromptu one-on-one and small group lessons are conducted during open play.
Quad and Quick Chess tournaments are conducted monthly. Quad matches are groups of 4 players of equal ability competing against each other. Quick Chess matches are games no longer than 30 minutes. For both tournaments, there is an US Chess Federation rated section, and an un-rated section for novices.
Lessons for children are conducted using the "Comprehensive Chess Course" by Pelts and Alburt.
The Mililani Chess Club meets every Thursday evening, excluding holidays, at Mililani Rec Center 2 on Anania Drive from 6 to 9pm. For more information, email the chess club or call members Barry Lee (625-8857), Guy Ontai ( 625-2769), Jon Young (626-2239), or Randy Prothero (625-5057).
