Interactive was awarded the "December Best of the Net" award from the Mining
Company. Accompanying the award was the following letter from Kathy Durham, director of
the Mining Company's Honolulu Guide:
"Congratulations
on an exceptional site. My "job" is to surf the Web looking for the best
resources for Oahu. I've been visiting Mililani Interactive since it was featured in
"Home on the Web" and have been very impressed with how well you all are
maintaining it. So, for having the vision to create Oahu's first neighborhood on the Net
and for keeping it current and useful for the community, it's easy to select Mililani
Interactive for the December Best of the Net from The Mining Company.
"I'm doing a series of articles and accompanying link library
pages for each of Oahu's neighborhoods. I hope that others use your site as a model and
inspiration for creating something similar for their neighborhoods.
"Hana hou! and keep up the great work. Believe me, I know it's
hard work!"

THE
1998 ELECTION -- LOOKING BACK
by Dwayne Yoshina, State Elections Officer
STATE CAPITOL - The General
Election went significantly smoother than the Primary Election when we introduced the new
voting system.
Once our Election Day Officials became accustomed with the precinct
counter machines, the polls opened and closed without the slowdowns that we saw in the
Primary Election.
The few polls that did close late were in the Kapolei and Waikele area
that had a rush of voters who arrived near the 6 p.m. closing time.
As far as voter turnout is concerned, this year's 412,517 ballots cast
is the largest turnout of any election. In 1994, voter turnout was at 377,011. In 1996,
turnout dropped to 370,230. So, we're very pleased with the increased number of voters
this year.
Throughout the evening, election results from the precincts were coming
in smoothly. The only slowdowns we experienced were with the tabulation of the absentee
ballots. It seems there was confusion, or people still wanted to mark the absentee mail
ballots with pen rather than with the pencil that was enclosed with their ballot. This is
something we hope to resolve by the next election.
Overall, the outcome of the General Election satisfied our goals. The
fairness and the integrity of the election was maintained, and that's what we aimed for.
TANUVASA
CONTINUES TO EXCEL IN NFL
MHS graduate Maa Tanuvasa came
into his own during the 1997 season, making the jump from part-time player to full-time
sack man, as he tied for the team lead in quaterback sacks (8.5) and excelled with his
play throughout the season.
He makes up for his lack of prototypical size with extraordinary
quickness, strength and agility - factors that figure to take him toward another
successful season with the NFL Champion Denver Broncos.
Tanuvasa has played in 32 regular season (six starts) and five
postseason (four starts) contests with 13.5 career sacks and 45 tackles (35 solo). He was
signed by the Broncos in February 1995 after brief stints with the Rams and Steelers.
Tanuvasa was originally an eighth round pick (209th overall) out of Hawaii in 1993 by the
Rams.
Currently, Tanuvasa is leading the Broncos in sacks with 8.
