MILILANI
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT IS MISSING by Louise Kim McCoy
HONOLULU, Tuesday, January
12,1999 - Her parents of course, are devastated. And just when it appeared things couldn't
get worse, suicide notes left behind in her room were found on Christmas Day.
Her name is Shannon Fletcher and she stands out. The 15 year old
Mililani High School sophmore is six feet tall. She took modeling classes and appeared to
be a typical teen. But dig a little deeper and you find Shannon had a bizarre fascination
with death and the occult.
Her parents didn't realize how serious her obsession was until December
15th when Shannon vanished. Her mother Cathy Fletcher said, " We have her Christmas
presents waiting for her to come back and open them."
Fletcher showed me her daughter's room where she knew Shannon was gone
because her closet was almost empty. Shannon's obsession with death is evident in her
room. From gargoyles to minature caskets, even her own troubling poetry.
Her parents say Shannon was also into witchcraft.
"Things have changed so much and I just can't understand. We love
her so much and we want her to come back."
Police initially opened a runaway case. Shannon has taken off twice
before, last April and September.
But when her parents found three suicide letters on Christmas day, they
became more alarmed. Fletcher said, "It was like taking your heart out and squeezing
it and throwing it on the ground and stomping on it."
Her husband, Bill Fletcher said, "Very blunt and rude letter. And
cold. Stating that she wants her freedom and only way she can get it without restriction
was to kill herself."
HPD's Missing Persons Detail is now investigating Shannon's
disappearance and fears that she may cause harm to herself.
Shannon had been going to a psychiatrist and is currently taking
medication for manic depression.
Her parents are haunted by so many questions.
"Knowing that she's okay. She's eating. Safe. protection. I miss
her," said Mr. Fletcher, who admitted to feeling helpless. "When a child dies,
you have closure. You know what happened. With this, we don't know."
But for now, the Fletchers can only hope for the best. Searching for
Shannon has been like looking for answers in a crystal ball.
Anyone with information about the teen is asked to call police or the
state Missing Children's Center at 586-1449. Shannon is described as being six feet tall,
130 pounds with dark red hair and braces.
