TIPS
FOR DEVELOPING A 13-MONTH YEAR
by Gary Powell Time! It can be your worst enemy or
your best friend depending on how well you manage it. The successful business owner sees
it as a precious asset.
Time in perspective: We all get the same allotment of 24 hours each
day. For the disorganized, who squander their time, it is an enemy. But for those who know
how to marshal their time and use it to their advantage, it is a good friend. It enables
them to lope along at a comfortable pace all week, take weekends off to enjoy family time
and still accomplish more than the rest of the world.
Time offers a special challenge for the business owner. That's because
the job appears never to be done. For some, each day is a flat-out race toward a finish
line that never gets within reach, as they run themselves into the ground. Some suffer
from burnout; others have heart attacks. It is no way to live, and it certainly is no way
to run a business. For you as a business owner, time management is not just a nice idea.
It is the cornerstone upon which your company's long-term success and your own well-being
depend. Effective time management, self-management really, helps you build your business
better, stronger, faster and more profitably.
To improve both the quality and the quantity of the time available to
you each working day:
- Do a "time audit."
Record how you utilize a typical workday, using 15-minute intervals. This will help you
identify time wasters.
- Establish priorities and
measurable goals. If you don't know what you want to achieve, then it doesn't
matter what you do to achieve it. Without priorities and goals, almost every action is a
time waster.
- Eliminate busy work.
These are tasks you simply don't need to do things that do not lead either directly or
indirectly to your company's growth and profitability. Look for ways to cut unnecessary
steps out of work routines. Working rule: If it isn't important, don't do it. Every action
during work time should be goal-directed - whether it's a phone call to a supplier,
business meeting, or a golf game. If it's not, stop doing it.
- Invest in daily planning.
Ten minutes of mapping out projects and tasks on a daily "To Do" list can save
hours of wasted time. Planning empowers you to move systematically through the important
tasks of the day without wondering what to do next. Suggestion: Leave some time to handle
the unexpected. Otherwise, you'll end up playing a frantic game of catch-up day after day.
- Delegate! Delegate
everything you can, not simply what you must. Not only will you have more time for things
that only you can handle, but your business will profit as well.
- Make a pledge to never work
weekends or evenings. This forces you to structure your time more efficiently. Most
of all, it allows you to enjoy the benefits of the life you are working to build.
- Live in two distinct worlds.
When you work, focus all your attention on the business of business; maintain a strong,
demanding pace. When you break from work, break completely. This means no briefcases home
on weekends or even thinking about work when you should be relaxing. Instead, make your
free time really free. This will improve the quality of both your work time and your
family time.
Add time to your day by cutting out such time wasters as television in the evening or
coming in a bit earlier each morning. You'll be amazed how it can pay off. Try building
what's called the 13-month year.
The 13-month year: There's
only so much you can do to make your time usage more efficient. Once you crank up the
quality, add some quantity, as well. Let's say you currently work eight hours a day from
eight to five, with an hour for lunch.
Add one extra hour each day. There are plenty of places to find 60
minutes without impacting your personal time. Start an hour earlier, stay an hour later,
divide up two half hours at the start and end of the day, or just cut your lunch hours in
half. Just make sure you don't slice into family time or weekends, which are crucial for
recharging your batteries.
The results can be incredible. Adding just one hour a day gives you
five hours a week or an average of 22 hours more a month. If you normally take four weeks
vacation, this single hour each day can generate an extra month of business productivity,
plus an additional two weeks vacation.
The Bottom Line. You
don't have to become a time management expert to capitalize on the benefits of more
effective use of your time. But keep in mind that the better you become at organizing
yourself and your time, the more you will improve the odds that you will achieve your
goals and keep your business productive and profitable. That's because time is more than
money. Time - and how well you use it - is a key element of long-term business success and
personal satisfaction.

FLUORIDATION
by Greg Weatherup
I grew up in Mililani,
attended Wheeler & MHS, and am now on the mainland for college, but I hope to return
after I'm pau with college. I don't know the details of whats going on with the City
Council or whatever, but I think I may have an insight for some people about this issue.
First, let me stress again that I don't know exactly whats going
on back there; I've been away for going on two years now (two years too many that is.) and
I don't visit this website very often, so there very well may be aspects of this issue I'm
unaware of.
I lived for 5 years on Hickam AFB where they do something to the water
for your teeth, I think its fluoridation. My family then moved to Mililani and we
lived there for many years (I consider it my home). I remember from Project Grad (class of
98) they took us to a place on Barbers Point, and Barbers Point also fluoridates its
water (or does something to it for your teeth). Since I had lived on
base previously, I ALMOST didn't notice the difference in the water, but my friends at the
table could barely stand the taste of the water.
I now live in a part of the mainland where the water is so bad tasting
and bad smelling and dirty (its got sulphur & other contaminants at unhealthy
levels) that I don't even like showering in it and I would never dream of drinking it. So
I know how important clean, clear water is (not to mention how nice it is). Many of the
locals here don't even thing twice about drinking the local "egg water"....
its scary, They are so used to it, that they think its fine.
What I'm trying to say is that while we would get used to the
fluoridated water rather quickly and not even notice the taste, we
would loose that clean, clear Hawaii`i water that I now so miss.

NEW
DEGREE PROGRAMS IN E-BUSINESS TO BE OFFERED BY UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX
HONOLULU/MILILANI - For people
interested in pursuing a career in E-Business, the University of Phoenix will offer tow
new degrees in this exciting filed: a Bachelor of Sciences in Business/E-Business and a
Master of Business Administration/E-Business.
The programs will be offered at the downtown campus, and the Mililani
and Kapolei learning centers, beginning in May and July, respectively. Demand for both
programs is high, so interested students should enroll as soon as possible.
E-business refers to the management of all the electronic functions of
any organization. The bachelor of science in business/E-business is designed to help
working adults use E-business fundamentals, including database management, web
programming, & the Internet in their everyday business.
The new MBA in E-Business, which will be launched in July, is focused
on the management of E-Business. A 45-credit program, it is designed to meet the needs of
a broad but unique population, the working adult manager or supervisor who could benefit
from a graduate business education. The program requires a practical background in
business, and three years of relevant experience.
The various components of the
program, curriculum, learning resources, and faculty, have been selected to produce
specific outcomes. These outcomes, while
reflecting contemporary academic practice, also focus on the functional competencies
required of working managers. Consequently, the MBA program emphasizes the identification,
analysis and solution of complex management problems that require technical understanding
and balanced decision making. Although a functional understanding of economics,
accounting, finance, quantitative analysis and management underlies the program, equal
attention is given to the development of report writing, oral reporting, Internet
research, and group process skills.
Courses include E-Business
Principles and Practices; E-Business Operations; E-Marketing Theory and Application; E-Law
and Risk Management; and E-Strategy Formulation and Implementation.
During the program, students will develop portfolio-quality outcomes
that demonstrate their competency to create or convert an existing business to an
electronic format. Graduates will be able to
use this portfolio when seeking promotions or new employment opportunities as a means to
demonstrate their competency in E-Business.
For more information on these programs, please contact the enrollment
department at 536-2686. |

NB 35 - UNOFFICIAL SYNOPSIS OF
APRIL 18 MEETING
by Noel Araki
Reports were given by the
Mililani Mauka Fire Department and by HPD.
C&C Parks & Recreation have started plans on the Mililani Mauka District Park (Located near the Park & Ride Facility.
Estimated start of land grading will begin late 2000 (September-October).
NB#35 Proposed a possible
move of meeting to Mililani Middle School. Please check notices for actual location
of the May 16 meeting. The move to the Mililani Middle school is being considered to allow
the use of the A/V facilities at Mililani Middle School so that our NB#35 meeting can be
taped for OLELO.
The Military at Schofield has given an open invitation to all Mauka
School Teachers for a tour of Schofield Barracks. Tours will
be modified for the specific grade levels. Contact the Military for more information.
SCBM Meeting April 26, 7:00pm at the
Mililani Middle School Administration Building.
A traffic light will be installed near the
Lelehua Golf Course. Bidding for the work will be started.
NB#35 is looking for other measures for "Traffic
Calming" on Meheula Parkway and Ainamakua Drive. Any Suggestions?
Castle & Cooke is asking for a modification
to the design plans for Unit 125. They want to get approval from NB#35 to change
the home lot configuration from a "Zero Lot Line" to a "Center Lot"
configuration. The change will move the homes towards the center of the lot with land
separating the homes. Castle & Cooke says it will not raise the price of these homes
because of the new layout, however they feel the value towards the new home buyer will be
increased with this configuration.
Residents and a few NB#35 members wanted to make an issue of not allowing Castle &
Cooke to make these changes
before they (Castle & Cooke) change the disclosure for the "Military Effect"
from the East Range. Castle & Cooke then
stated that they have all the necessary permits to proceed with the "Zero Lot"
homes in Unit 125, However they felt that the "Center Lot" would be more
pleasing, in view of the entire community. (MAP OF MASTER DEVELOPMENT)
Decision on an issue regarding the amount/type of noise
coming from the Military's use of the East Range Training
Area was deferred. New Residents are concerned that the "Noise" is not
disclosed to potential home buyers in the Mauka Community. Castle & Cooke stated that
they disclose to "buyers" about "Military Effects" and that it is also
listed on the Deed. Castle & Cooke will be bringing in the current
disclosure/documents that they currently are using. More testimony will be allowed at the
May 16th meeting, Castle & Cooke and Military Representatives will be in attendance.
NB#35 is requesting that the "Disclosure" be updated and made clearer to future
residents, especially as the Mauka Development grows closer to the East Range. Residents
have asked if the Military can move the boundaries of the East Range further away from
Mililani Mauka. |
