ONLINE POLL: MULTI-TRACK

    March 1998 - The recently completed poll on multi-track attracted over 400 responses - sixty-five % were in favor of multi-track, 35% were against or want more information. "The online poll is a survey of visitors to the site - it’s not a scientific poll, but it does indicate that multi-track is an important issue for many people in the community," said a volunteer at Mililani Interative. "With help from people on both sides of the issue, we’ll try to post more articles about multi-track in the coming weeks.  For the sake of our children & our schools, the community needs to find common ground on this issue."


INCUMBENTS RE-ELECTED TO MTA BOARD

    March 1998 - Elected to new 3-year terms for the MTA Board of Directors were incumbents Darrlyn Bunda, Ross Kazama, & Glenn Yoshimori. Ballots were tallied on Mar 18, & the results were reported at the annual MTA meeting held on the evening of Mar 18. The MTA board & the MTA administrative staff are involved in making significant decisions that impact every property owner in Mililani.


MARCH GREAT MONTH FOR MILILANI GOLFERS

    March 1998 - The following Mililani golfers achieved rare hole-in-ones: Arthur Ouye on Mar 15 on the 170-yd 8th hole of Barbers Point with a 4-iron; Gary Ishikawa on Mar 17 on the 119-yd 2nd hole of Ewa Villages with a 9-iron; Kevin Fukushima on Mar 17 on the 154-yd 8th hole of Ewa Beach with a 7-wood; & Rodney Kau on Mar 19 on the 133-yd 2nd hole of Olomana with an 8-iron.


NEIGHBORHOOD BOARD NO.35 REPORT

    March 1998 - In it's Feb meeting, the NB35 took the following actions: recommend that the city install a left-turn phasing at the intersection of Meheula Parkway & Ainamakua Drive; recommend the general excise tax not be increased & the counties' share of the transient accommodations tax not be reduced; recommend the proposed zipper lane be reserved for vehicles with 3 or more occupants & the HOV lane remain for vehicles with 2 or more occupants; support installation of a stop light at the intersection of Kamehameha Highway & Leilehua Golf Course Road; & recommend to the city that Express Bus 98 service only Mililani Mauka for the 6am & 4:15pm routes.
    The board also heard reports on the proposed McDonald's restaurant that will open in October, donation of computers to Mililani Mauka Elementary School by BHP Hawaii, & the H-1 zipper lane that will be accessible at the junction of H-1 & H-2 in August.
    The board also approved the following CIP requests to the city: Mililani Mauka Neighborhood Park - comfort station, parking lot, rec center bldg, tennis & basketball cts, softball field with backstop, dugouts, fencing, & bleachers; Kuahelani Neighborhood Park - raise 3rd base, bleachers, & allowing parking on Lanikuhana Ave; Kipapa Community Park - dugouts; & bike lanes on Meheula Pkwy & Ainamakua Dr.


CRACKSEED SHOP ADDED TO TOWN CENTER

    March 1998 - All Cracked Up Too recently opened next to ProfessionNails. The shop carries a broad variety of crackseed snacks. It also sells the popular guri goodie ice-cream.


MULTI-TRACK DISCUSSED ON WEBSITE

    March 1998 - A new website which presents information against the proposed multi-track schedule for the new middle school is at www.pixi.com/~mysc/multi_track.html.     The site was created by Andrew Large, a Mililani resident.


CONSOLIDATED TO ADD MORE THEATERS

    March 1998 - Consolidated Theatres will be building a new 14-screen complex in the Town Center in a new building adjacent to the Fun Factory & Radio Shack.The 56,000-square-foot complex will include retail businesses, a coffee shop, & a restarurant. More than 75 permanent jobs will be created. Opening is scheduled for October of next year.


SPREWELL DECISION UNPOPULAR

    March 1998 - In a poll conducted by Mililani Interactive, 85% of respondents did not agree with the recent Lattrell Sprewell arbitration decision.
    The online poll is a new feature being tested by Mililani Interactive. John Pescador, founder of Mililani Interactive said that if the poll proves popular & useful to visitors of the site, it will become a permanent feature.
    The next polling question will focus on the multi-track issue.


MTA BALLOTS DUE MAR 18

    March 1998 - Mail-in ballots for the election to fill 3 vacancies on the MTA board must be received at the MTA administrative office on Kaloapua St by Mar 18. Proxies should also be returned to ensure a quorum for the 7pm annual meeting.


HANALANI SCHOOLS HONORS STUDENTS

    March 1998 - A team from Hanalani Schools took second place honors at the State Science Bowl competition. Team members included: Mitchell Ho, Cory Gibo, Jessica Elliott, Karisa Asato, & team captain Cherise Ho. The team was coached by Carmela Minaya. Eight grader Sean Simmons, 9th grader Khara Chilcote, & 11th grader Jessica Elliott also earned the right to represent Hanalani Schools in next month’s Hawaii State Science Fair.

   HEALTHY KIDS DAY THIS SATURDAY

    March 1998 - The public is invited to a Heatlhy Kids Day Celebration this Friday April 4 from 7am to 12 pm at the Mililani YMCA. A 6.5-mile scholarship walk-a-thon starts at 7am. The celebration will feature games & prizes, art display, food, music, & obstacle course. Special guests include UH athletes. Call 625-1040 for more info.


TEA PARTY PROTESTS TAX INCREASES

    March 1998 - About 200 people gathered for a "tea party" at the State Capitol on Friday Mar 27 to protest bills which would hike the general excise tax. A new bill opposing any tax increase was circulated. "Senator Iwase is supporting this new bill, & we are grateful for his support. This rally is to bring attention to the need for new direction & bi-partisan effort to revive our economy," said Mililani resident Laura Brown. The rally was sponsored by KHVH Radio.


HOW MILILANI LEGISLATORS VOTED

    March 1998 - Bills were recently voted on to exchange between the House & Senate. Most of the bills will be rewritten & exchanged again by April 16. Here’s how Mililani legislators voted on bills to address Hawaii’s economy.
    HOUSE BILLS: Lower personal income tax rates, establish low-income tax credit, & raise the general excise tax - Lee & Menor Yes. Make Land Use Commission responsible for classifying conservation land with counties responsible for all other land classifications - Lee & Menor No. Allow state/county agencies to privatize operations irrespective of other laws - Lee & Menor No. Ban workers’ compensation claims related to stress from disciplinary actions when employer acts in good faith - Lee & Menor Yes. Reduced the amount national parties can contribute to a local campaign - Lee & Menor Yes. Constitutional amendment to allow for elected school board - Lee Yes, Menor Absent. Allow state to contract with private company to build prisons - Lee & Menor Yes. Allow governor to negotiate for the development of private correctional facilities - Lee Yes, Menor Absent.
    SENATE BILLS: Lower personal income tax rates, lower corporate tax rates, remove 4% general excise tax on food for home consumption, require creation of jobs from businesses benefiting from bill - Iwase Yes. Impose 11.5% transient accommodations tax on time share units - Iwase Yes. Ban workers’ compensation claims related to stress from disciplinary actions when employer has just cause - Iwase No. Pilot project for campaign finance reform - Iwase Yes.
    HOUSE/SENATE BILLS: Increase the transient accommodation tax to provide more money for tourism promotion - all voted Yes. Eliminate 40-50% of all state vacant positions - all voted Yes. Require government agencies to establish time limits for processing of licenses, permits, & approvals - all voted Yes. Create task force to eliminate government duplications - all voted Yes. Give the UH more autonomy - all voted Yes.


PEOPLE MAKING NEWS

    March 1998 - Hanalani Schools senior Cherise Ho was named a National Merit Scholar Finalist. Bruce Barrett is the new sales manager & broker-in-charge at Castle & Cooke Homes. MHS junior Jeremy Barrett Guillory recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout.


KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION AT KIPAPA

NEIGHBORHOOD BOARD NO.25 REPORT

    March 1998 - At its February meeting, the NB25 took the following actions: supported the city’s proposal to extend the landscaped median strips on Lanikuhana Ave between Meheula Pkwy & Kaekae St; supported the YMCA’s planned Healthy Kids Day Walkathon to be held on April 4 7am-12pm; & opposed any proposals for increasing the general excise tax & decreasing the counties’ share of the transient accommodations tax.


PARENTS URGED TO ATTEND PROJECT GRAD MEETING

    March 1998 - Parents of graduating seniors are urged to attend an informational project graduation meeting on April 22 at 7pm (location to be announced later).
    The purpose of project graduation is to provide a safe, secure, & drug-free environment for graduates to celebrate graduation. It’s being sponsored by MHS’s Students & Parents Against Drugs & Alcohol (SPADA).
    To help defray costs, SPADA is also assisting with fundraising. The recent Zippy’s Chili fundraiser was a success. The next fundraiser is a Sadie Hawkins Dance which will be held on May 23.

PEOPLE MAKING NEWS

    March 1998 - Dakila Q. Clark was named to the dean’s list at Colby College in Maine. Central Oahu Soroptimist’s graffiti-free campaign placed third in the Soroptimists Celebrating Success awards program. MHS senior Bryan Black took top honors in the state Shakespeare competition. MHS student Reid Chung participated in the Presidential Classroom Scholars Program in Washington, D.C.
