| SOLD-OUT
AUDIENCE AT DANCE COMPETITION
JUNE 2001 - "A Chance to Dance," a dance competition hosted by Drill Team
Hawaii, took place on Saturday, April 14, 2001 in front of a sold-out audience at the
Leeward Community College Theatre. The best in show were the Squirettes from La
Marada, California.
More than 150 girls and boys competed in eight divisions including:
Solo, Hip-Hop, Pom, Lyrical, Jazz, Variety, Pointe, and Novelty.
Commented Drill Team Hawaii director, Penny Young, "There was
so much impressive dance talent at this competition. But more important, this provided a fun and exciting venue for local groups to showcase their work."
Five local teams participated, along with the Squirettes. Drill Team Hawaii, Hawaii Pacific University Dancers and University of Hawaii Rainbow Dancers performed exhibition dance routines.
"We've named this event "A Chance to Dance" so that we can dance for each other," said Young. "It lets us see what the girls (and boys) can do and lets you (dancers) see what others are doing so
that we can grow closer together and appreciate each other."
Drill Team Hawaii, under the direction of Penny Young and her daughter Febray Kaopua, was founded in 1973 with 16 girls, and presently consists of 100 girls ranging in ages preschool to college.
They will be having their annual Dance Showcase on June 27at the Hawaii Theatre and intend to make "A Chance to Dance" an annual event.
TRAFFIC
SIGNALS ON MEHEULA PARKWAY & HO'OKELWA'A
by Council Member Rene
Mansho
JUNE 2001 - In regards to the complaints about the traffic signals
on Meheula Parkway and Ho`okelewa`a Street, here is an update on the City's Dept. of Design and Construction's
"Rehabilitation of Streets" project which seems to be affecting the traffic signals in Mililani:
1. The City is currently repairing the curbs and gutters and
resurfacing the streets. In the meantime, to prepare the roads
for Phase Two of this project (which is still in the design phase),
they
need to start installing duct line or conduits for crosswalk buttons, etc.
They are doing this now so they won't have to rip up the roadway and
repave
it again. In so doing, the "loop detectors" that read the number of cars
approaching and going through an intersection have been disconnected
and will remain so until late fall. This is the case at
Meheula/Anania, Meheula/Makaimoimo, Meheula/Lanikuhana,
Meheula/Kuahelani.
2. The people at the City Dept. of Transportation Services, Traffic
Signal
Field Operations are aware that the signals at these intersections are
currently working on a set time. According to Field Operations, the timers are
working appropriately.
3. The Traffic Control Branch sent a team to look at the
situation. They have made some minor adjustments to the traffic signal
timers in the area to help ease rush hour traffic; however, without
"loop sensors," the problem will persist. I submitted another request for
them to re-check the signals since we continue to learn about
complaints from motorists.
4. In hindsight, the City officials should have notified the
neighborhood
boards, Ka Nupepa, MTA, and the community to be prepared for this
temporary inconvenience. I have asked the departments to keep us
apprised of their progress in order that we can alert the community
appropriately.
PARKING
AT MILILANI DISTRICT PARK
by Council Member Rene Mansho
JUNE 2001 - While parking during sports tournaments at
Mililani District Park is in demand, the reason for the
restrictions in certain areas is safety.
Residents
have been calling the police who in turn are issuing
tickets for illegal parking. Parking along the park-side
of Lanikuhana is permitted during the weekends and
holidays. The
stretch of available parking begins from the comfort
station and ends shortly before Keaoopua St.
There
is parking available on the other side of the park off of
Keaoopua St., but many people are reluctant to park there
and walk to the playfields with their coolers and
equipment. This
is understandable. Our
weekend activities should be stress-free.
That is why the Mililani Vision Team requested
money for the design and construction of “Additional
Parking at Mililani District Park.”
The project is currently in the design phase and
will be sent out to bid this fall and completed in 2002.
In the meantime, the police are asking for
everyone’s cooperation.

CHEERLEADERS WORK HARD TO EXCEL
JUNE 2001 - The past school year was very rewarding for the Mililani High School
cheerleaders. The OIA has finally named cheerleading as a sport.
The girls and some times boys work hard year long, not only to support the
football and basketball team, but to compete as well. Their season
begins in May, & tryouts are held and conditioning
begins in June.
They go year round to cheer at games and school pep rallies. Yet they still manage to keep a 2.0
or higher grade point average and practice for the championship.
This year the first annual OIA cheerleading championship was held,
& Mililani High School JV took 2nd place and the Varsity took 3rd out of 22 schools. There were no
divisions, and the all girl squad beat out squads twice their size.
They also competed in the U of H Spirit challenge
competion, The JV took 2nd place and the Varsity took 3rd place. The varsity
squad also went on to the NCA West Coast Competition in Disneyland. They competed
against schools from all around the US and scored the second highest overall!
