| SATURDAY
OPEN MARKET...A WINNER FOR SHOPPERS & STUDENTS Mililani High School - The corn growing
in the fenced area across from the YumYum Tree restaurant is the expanded farm for
Mililani High Schools agricultural department. By the end of May, the sweet corn
will be available to early shoppers at the weekly Saturday Open Market coordinated by the
MHS school-to-work program.
The open market is run by students in the Agribusiness course
and the Future Farmers of America (FFA) program. The AQUA corporation
(Accelerating Quality Use of Agriculture) is the name of the students enterprise,
and in addition to seeking vendors and managing the weekly market, the students have a
venue to sell school-grown produce and other products.
Vendors and wares vary by the week, however bargains in fresh and
unusual vegetables, fruits, flowers and plants are available every week. The fresh, sweet
papayas year round are a favorite with regular shoppers. The andagi from the Andagi Guy is
a brisk seller whenever he comes. Two large vegetable vendors are regulars every week, and
several small farmers bring their peak season vegetables fresh from the fields. The
student stall is open on the first Saturday of each month or whenever the crops are ready
for sale. The prices are comparable to or lower than supermarket produce.
The open market is held each Saturday at the high school
parking lot from 9 am to noon. Shoppers come from throughout Mililani and nearby
communities for the variety of fresh produce. Proceeds from the operation go to students
as scholarship awards & to subsidize their participation in the FFA program.
Come by and support the students, and you'll be a winner too with
tasty, fresh vegetables and other goodies.
CANCER SOCIETY
NEEDS COMMUNITYS SUPPORT
May 1998 - A RELAY FOR LIFE
fund-raising event will be held in Wahiawa from 7pm July 11 to 7am July 12. "This is
the American Cancer Society Central/Leeward Units signature fund-raiser," said event
chair & Mililani resident Darrlyn Bunda.
The overnight event will be held at Leilehua High Schools
track/field. Teams of 10 people will be raising money & pledges to keep a
walker/runner on the track throughout the evening & early morning hours. "We hope
to have at least 15 teams participating," said Bunda. "And were combining
the walking & running with live entertainment, games, & other activities. Everyone
is invited to come join in the fun for this very worthy cause."
The Relay for Life is more than a
fundraiser. It's also a community celebration of life & an awareness-raising
event of the progress being made against cancer. According to Bunda, the event will
kick-off with cancer survivors, like herself, walking &/or running the Relay's first
lap. The Royal Hawaiian Band will perform from 6pm-7pm, then at 10pm, there'll be a
special luminary ceremony, & candles will be lit & placed around the track in
honor of survivors & in remembrance of those who have lost the battle against cancer.
Businesses, community organizations, families, & friends are
invited to form a team & challenge others to do the same. Volunteers are also needed
to help with the event. If youd like to help or need more information, call the
American Cancer Societys Central/Leeward Office at 486-8420.
"Last year, funds raised were used to service 720 cancer
patients & their families living in Central/Leeward Oahu, including nearly a
hundred people from Mililani," said Bunda. "Cancer is indiscriminate,
it can strike anyone, & we need all the support we can get to help ensure continued
services to these patients."
