| PLANNING FOR TRAFFIC CALMING CONTINUES The city is continuing discussions with
area residents on various traffic calming methods for selected streets in Mililani.
Areas underder consideration include Waena Elementary &
Kipapa Drive near Kipapa Elementary.
City transportation officials told residents the $160,000 project will
be put out to bid by December 1998, & construction should begin by March 1999.
Residents urged city officials to conduct trial tests before proceeding
with bidding & construction, & also discuss the proposals with school officials.
Editor: "Perhaps a
"Drive Slower" educational campaign might be less expensive & more effective
than permanent alterations to Mililani streets."

SAY ITS NOT SO MCDONALDS
When McDonalds announced
the building of a new restaurant in Mililani Mauka, it said the restaurant would
"have a green Monier tile roof that complements many of the homes & businesses in
the area."
Little did Mililani residents know that the new McDonalds would
have several rain-gutter-size strips of lighting running from the top of its roof to the
roof's edges. The color of the roof blends in nicely with nearby buildings, but the new
lighting is gaudy & an eye-sore.
Just imagine if the roof of every commercial building in Mililani were
lit-up with the same type of rain-gutter size lighting.
What did our community leaders have in mind when they threw their
support behind the building of the restaurant? Did they have all the necessary information
to make the right decision? Was information withheld? What if another commercial building
wants to install the same kind of gaudy eye-sore lighting? What if a homeowner were to
want to install similar lighting?
There is no question that McDonalds tries to blend into a
community & be a good neighbor. But the lighting on its new restaurant is puzzling. If
McDonalds was motivated by concern about being visible, the new restaurant is only a
few feet away from the highway, making it nearly impossible not to be noticed.
The lighting sets an unusual precedent for Mililani. Is that the price
Mililani has to pay for a new McDonald's restaurant?
McDonald's
WHY CAN'T MILILANI BE LIKE WAHIAWA?
The new McDonald's restaurant
in Wahiawa will be designed to blend in with the Wahiawa community.
Unlike Wahiawa, the newly built McDonald's in Mililani Mauka is drawing
a lot of negative attention.
Postings to the bulletin board
at Mililani Interactive indicate frustration with the design of the new Mililani
restaurant - such as: "The gutter-size lighting on its roof is an eyesore...it should
have made a better effort to blend-in with the community...the roof is dirty... Zippy's
does a better job with its design."
One person remarked, "looks
like they (McDonald's) chose the easy way by just importing a Mainland design &
dumping it on Mililani."
MILILANI
ONLINE POLL PROVES SURPRISINGLY ACCURATE
Mililani Interactive's online
poll on the governor race was surprisingly accurate.
The tracking poll as of the Saturday prior to election day showed
Cayetano leading Lingle 50% to 49%. The actual vote tally showed Cayetano winning by a
margin of 49.5% to 48.2%.
"This was just a fluke," said Mililani Interactive
spokesperson John Pescador. "Our polls are unscientific - they just sample the views
of people visiting our web site."
"But it's been interesting," said Pescador. During the
primary, we had 1,625 participants in our poll. For the general, we started a new tracking
poll, & the number of participants nearly doubled to 3,005."
"As long as there's interest in our online polls, we'll keep
running them," said Pescador.

by Council Member Rene Mansho
The City Department of
Transportation Services is currently in discussion with Castle and Cooke, LOTMA, and
TransHawaiian in regards to a fare-free transfer system from the Mililani Trolley to the
City Buses on Kam. Hwy.
I also support fare-free transfer for City bus riders dropping off on
Kam. Hwy. and transferring onto the Mililani Trolley. This
would mean that the City would reimburse TransHawaiian $1.00 for each transfer from Kam.
Hwy.
WHAT DO YOU THINK? CAN WE JUSTIFY USE OF PUBLIC FUNDS FOR THE KAM. HWY.

TROLLEY
NEEDS MORE RIDERS
During the first 10 days of operation (Nov 1-10), daily ridership for the new
Mililani Trolley averaged 200.
Currently, daily ridership is averaging 100. To be economically
viable, ridership must increase to 300 per day.
Castle & Cooke & Trans Hawaiian, operators of the Trolley, are
applying for a permit to begin a $20 monthly pass.
"I am awaiting a resolution to be submitted by the City Department
of Transportation Services for the City Council to approve fare-free-transfer from the
Mililani Trolley to the City buses on Kamehameha Hwy," said Council Member Rene
Mansho. "The monthly pass & free-transfer to City buses should help to
increase ridership.

you have ideas about the Trolley, post them to the bulletin
