| IT'S LINGLE VS. CAYETANO IN THE GENERAL STATE CAPITOL - Maui Mayor Linda Lingle
beat former Honolulu Mayor Frank Fasi over 2 to 1 in the republican primary race for
governor. Lingle will face incumbent Governor Ben Cayetano in the general election on Nov.
3.
In the race for lieutenant governor, Stan Koki beat Mike Liu 47% to 41%
in the republican primary. Popular incumbent Mazie Hirono received 90% of the democrat
vote.
In the City Council District 1 race, incumbent Rene Mansho was
re-elected when she received 52% of the votes cast. She turned back a strong bid by
businessman & community activist Cliff LaBoy who received 41% of the votes.
In the 18th senatorial district, democrat incumbent Randy Iwase was
unopposed, & will face republican challenger Roger Ancheta who was also unopposed.
In State House District 38, democrat Marilyn Lee was unopposed.
She will face republican Rodney Botelho who was also unopposed.
In State House District 39, democrat incumbent Ron Menor was
unopposed. He will face republican Guy Ontai in the general election. Ontai beat fellow
republican Irene McEnerney.

What is "traffic calming?"
It's a city-sponsored pilot program to implement traffic-slowing methods in selected
residential areas on Oahu
How much is it costing? A consultant is being paid $160,000 to
coordinate implementation of projects in each of the 9 council districts. $250,000
have been allocated for the projects in the 1998-99 city budget.
How are locations being selected? The consultant is working with
communities & the City Transportation Services department to identify specific trouble
areas.

KIDS ELIGIBLE TO VOTE
IN GENERAL ELECTION
MILILANI ROTARY CLUB -- In a collaborative effort spearheaded by the Rotary Cub of Hawaii, Hawaii kids in grades K-12
are being given the opportunity to go to the official polling sites with an adult &
cast their ballots in the general election on November 3.
In Mililani, the effort is being coordinated by the Mililani Sunrise Rotary Club. The
chairperson for KIDS VOTING HAWAII is
former t.v. & radio personality Linda Coble, & the executive director is Lyla
Berg,
At the polling sites, kids will cast their own ballots at their own
KIDS VOTING HAWAII vote station & drop their ballots in their own ballot boxes.
Nationally, 5 million kids in 40 states are participating. In the
previous general election, communities with the kids voting program reported a voter
turnout increase of between 3 & 9 percent.
