IT'S LINGLE VS. CAYETANO IN THE GENERAL

    STATE CAPITOL - Maui Mayor Linda Lingle beat former Honolulu Mayor Frank Fasi over 2 to 1 in the republican primary race for governor. Lingle will face incumbent Governor Ben Cayetano in the general election on Nov. 3.
    In the race for lieutenant governor, Stan Koki beat Mike Liu 47% to 41% in the republican primary. Popular incumbent Mazie Hirono received 90% of the democrat vote.
    In the City Council District 1 race, incumbent Rene Mansho was re-elected when she received 52% of the votes cast. She turned back a strong bid by businessman & community activist Cliff LaBoy who received 41% of the votes.
    In the 18th senatorial district, democrat incumbent Randy Iwase was unopposed, & will face republican challenger Roger Ancheta who was also unopposed.
     In State House District 38, democrat Marilyn Lee was unopposed. She will face republican Rodney Botelho who was also unopposed.
     In State House District 39, democrat incumbent Ron Menor was unopposed. He will face republican Guy Ontai in the general election. Ontai beat fellow republican Irene McEnerney.

ESSAY CONTEST

    More than $2,000 in cash & prizes will go to the winners of the "What is Special about Mililani to Me" contest, sponsored by Castle & Cooke Homes & other Mililani businesses in celebration of Mililani’s 30th birthday.
    Entries will be grouped into 4 divisions - 2nd/3rd grades; 4th/5th grades; 6th-8th grades; & 9th-12th grades.  The contest is open only to Mililani residents.
    Entries must be typed on 8.5x11 inch paper, double space. In the upper left corner of the first page, the contestant should include his/her full name, home address, home telephone number, current grade level, & name of school.
    Entries must be mailed to Ka Nupepa, 1034 Kilani Ave., Suite 108, Wahiawa, Hawaii 96789, & postmarked no later than Sept. 30.

EARN YOUR DEGREE IN AS LITTLE AS TWO YEARS

    MILILANI LEARNING CENTER - The University of Phoenix, Hawaii Campus will hold an information seminar on Wednesday, October 7 at 6pm.
    The seminar will be held at the Mililani Learning Center, which is located in the Mililani Technology Park at 300 Kahelu Avenue, Suite 10. To reserve a space, please call Deborah Lagunero at 536-2686 no later than Tuesday, October 6
    The University of Phoenix offers various graduate & undergraduate degree programs in business, nursing, & education.
    A variety of certificate programs, workshops, & custom seminars are also available. Classes for Mililani residents are held at the Mililani location. Most programs are geared to the busy working adult who wants to earn a college degree in as little as 2 years.

TRAFFIC CALMING

What is "traffic calming?"  It's a city-sponsored pilot program to implement traffic-slowing methods in selected residential areas on Oahu
How much is it costing?  A consultant is being paid $160,000 to coordinate implementation of projects in each of the 9 council districts.   $250,000 have been allocated for the projects in the 1998-99 city budget.
How are locations being selected? The consultant is working with communities & the City Transportation Services department to identify specific trouble areas.
Which areas are being considered in Mililani?   Lanikuhana Avenue near the Town Center, Kamaio Stree near the Mililani Market Place, Wikao & Kuahelani streets, & streets near Kipapa Elementary & Mililani Mauka Elementary.

CUB SCOUTS RECRUITING NEW MEMBERS

    Cub Scout Pack 364 will have an informational meeting for parents & interested kids at the Mililani Uka Elementary School Cafteria on Sept. 18 at 7pm.
    Cub scouts are for boys in grades one to five.

   KIDS ELIGIBLE TO VOTE IN GENERAL ELECTION

    MILILANI ROTARY CLUB -- In a collaborative effort spearheaded by the Rotary Cub of Hawaii, Hawaii kids in grades K-12 are being given the opportunity to go to the official polling sites with an adult & cast their ballots in the general election on November 3.
    In Mililani, the effort is being coordinated by the Mililani Sunrise Rotary Club. The chairperson for KIDS VOTING HAWAII is former t.v. & radio personality Linda Coble, & the executive director is Lyla Berg,
    At the polling sites, kids will cast their own ballots at their own KIDS VOTING HAWAII vote station & drop their ballots in their own ballot boxes.
    Nationally, 5 million kids in 40 states are participating. In the previous general election, communities with the kids voting program reported a voter turnout increase of between 3 & 9 percent.

    SEPTEMBER 1998 - Jordyn Keamo, daughter of Naomi & James Keamo, took 4th place in the Meadow Gold Healthy Baby Contest...Mililani’s Hula Halau `O Hokulani, led by kumu hula Hokulani & Larry DeRego, won the Polynesian Cutural Center’s annual keiki (children’s) hula competition...Mililani Girls’ Soccer Team captured the 1998 AYSO World Games Division 2  Championship...Niole Manago took 2nd place in the under-100 lbs division at the United States Judo Feeration Junior National Champioships...Dr. Stan Kobayashi has qualified for the 20th Ironman Triathlon...Shenri-Ann Cabison won the American Model of the Year award at the National American Beauty Talent & Modeling scholarship competition...Thomas Ward received a B.S. with honors in electrical engr. from Tulane Univ.-- he was also commissioned as a 2nd lt. in the U.S. Airforce...Northwestern freshman Jennifer Taira was named to the spring quarter Dean's List...Mandy Morinaka won a gold medal in food service competition at the Food Service Club National Leadership Meeting in New Orleans...

    A study by Nielsen Media Research reported that approximately 70.2 million Americans are using the Internet, or approximately 35 percent of all adults over 16. The study also predicated by the late 1999 or early 2000, half of all adults in America & Canada will be using the Internet.
